Trapani-Birgi Airport, the third busiest in Sicily, is used by both civil and military sources, and has seen rapid growth in recent years. A little more than nine miles from Trapani itself, it is a great base from which to enter Sicily and hire a car. Also known as Vincenzo Florio Airport, after the famous local who instigated the gruelling and legendary Targa Florio motor race which the island was once famed for, the airport handles almost two million passengers each year, a number that is expected to grow as more cut-price airlines choose to use it as a terminal.

The airport itself began life as a small and little-used base in the 1960’s, before it was required to grow to keep up with the increasing demand for visitors to Sicily. However, it fell out of favour during the 1990’s and was only re-launched in its present, more modern, form in the early part of this century. It is now considered to be a very important part of the growing and popular tourist industry on which Sicily is largely dependent for income, and continues to attract those wish to hire a car and explore this wonderful part of the island.

Trapani airport is well served by local road networks and features its own spur connecting hire car drivers with the main SP21 and SS115 routes. These major roads in turn connect drivers with links to all the main attractions, cities and towns that the island is home to, including the bustling and important capital city of Palermo. With many towns and villages in the region, exploring by car is the best way to get the most from a stay in Trapani.

trapani and its surroundings

Situated on the west coast of the fascinating island of Sicily is Trapani, a truly delightful town with many fine buildings and a cultural history to rival any other. Featuring a lovely climate that offers warm summers, Trapani has become popular with tourists who enjoy the beaches and easy access to other attractions in the region.

With its own airport, Trapani is a great place to hire a car with which to explore the island, for the great road networks and proximity to many of the islands most impressive places makes it easy to get around.

A small and friendly town, Trapani is nevertheless one of the more worthy tourist destinations on Sicily as it offers a variety of cultural influences, historical artefacts and local cuisine, all in a relaxed and enjoyable environment that could only be Italy.

Looking out over the Mediterranean Sea, Trapani boasts a history going back to ancient times before the Birth of Christ, and is today an important town with many impressive buildings. Churches abound, and of particular interest are the churches of Sant'Agostino and Santa Maria di Gesu which, as with most of the old buildings in Trapani, date from medieval times, there being none of the ancient town left. A wonderfully evocative cable car ride takes in views over the old cobbled streets, while the castle is another of the towns more prominent attractions.

For holidaymakers there are further reasons to head to Trapani – the wonderful Mediterranean beaches. The climate in the summer lends itself perfectly to sunbathing, and with a hire car it is easy to reach the best stretches which are a few miles from the city itself. The town is an important one for fishing and also home to other industries such as canning foods and the farming and export of coral, while the local marsala wine comes highly recommended.
